Website security

A hacked website costs far more than the fix.

Lost customers, delisted search results, weeks of clean-up. Our security products — malware protection, SSL certificates, a managed SSL service and daily backups — exist so the worst week of your business year never happens in the first place. Domain Protection covers the registration record they all depend on.

Security products from $2.99/month — an independent reseller, supplied through one of the world’s largest registrars. The price for every product is printed below, including renewal prices.

A website's security stack in one view: a large shield with a checkmark at the centre, an HTTPS certificate panel and padlock above it, a firewall wall and a malware scan card to one side, and secure backup drives with a cloud upload on the other, all joined by glowing connection lines.
  • Website SecurityFirewall, daily scans and malware cleanup.
  • SSL CertificatesEncrypts traffic and removes browser warnings.
  • Managed SSL ServiceWe install, validate and renew it for you.
  • Website BackupDaily snapshots with one-click restore.

What covers what

Which product does which job

These are separate products on purpose — most sites need one or two, not all four. Here is what each job is and who sells it.

A firewall in front of your site

Malicious traffic is filtered before it reaches you, blocking the automated scans that hit every website constantly. Website Security includes this on every tier.

Daily malware scans

Files and database checked every day, so an infection is caught in hours instead of by a confused customer. Website Security includes this on every tier.

Automatic removal

Anything detected is quarantined and cleaned. Website Security includes one cleanup a year on Standard and unlimited cleanups on the two tiers above.

SSL on every page

Modern browsers label unencrypted sites 'Not secure' before a visitor reads a single word. Buy an SSL Certificate — or note that every Website Security plan already includes one through its firewall.

Daily backups

Snapshots with one-click restore — the difference between a bad afternoon and losing three years of content. This is Website Backup, a separate product, though Advanced and Premium Website Security plans include 25–200 GB of backup storage.

Search-engine safe

Hacked sites get delisted fast. Staying clean — with the scanning, removal and encryption above — protects the rankings you spent years earning.

Security products

Four products for the site. One for the name.

Each one is bought separately. Most sites end up needing at least two — encryption plus either scanning or backups.

Website Security — see plans and pricing

Website Security

Firewall, daily malware scanning and automatic removal if something does get through. Best for sites that need active protection and cleanup.

Starting at $5.99 per month
SSL Certificates — see plans and pricing

SSL Certificates

The padlock that stops browsers warning your visitors away before they read a word. You install it yourself, or hand it to the Managed SSL Service below. Best for encryption on a site hosted anywhere.

Starting at $39.99 per year
Managed SSL Service — see plans and pricing

Managed SSL Service

Certificate work done for you: issued, validated, installed and renewed on your behalf, so it never lapses. Best for sites on our WordPress or Web Hosting plans — it does not cover self-managed servers.

Starting at $199.99 per year
Website Backup — see plans and pricing

Website Backup

Daily snapshots with one-click restore, because bad updates happen to careful people too. Best for sites on cPanel Hosting, where backups are an add-on rather than part of the plan.

Starting at $2.99 per month

Pricing excludes applicable taxes and ICANN fees. Prices shown are first-term prices; the renewal price is shown on each plan before you pay.

The domain itself

A secure website can still lose its name.

Firewalls, SSL and backups protect the site. None of them stop a domain from being unlocked, transferred or allowed to expire — and losing the name takes the site and every mailbox on it with it.

  • Change alerts on the registration recordDNS, nameservers, contacts, locks and transfers.
  • A 180-day activity logRead-only evidence of what changed, when and by whom.
  • Recovery after an unexpected expiryUltimate adds a 90-day renewal window after a billing failure.

Privacy is not protection

Domain Privacy replaces the contact details in public WHOIS. Domain Protection guards the registration itself. One hides who you are; the other stops someone else taking control. They are separate products and they solve different failures.

Not every extension supports every protection feature. The cart lists what applies to the name you are buying before you pay.

Questions to ask before you buy

Including the two we hear most: whether you are a target, and what to do if you have already been hit.

Is my small website really a target?
Almost all attacks are automated and indiscriminate — they scan every domain they can find for known vulnerabilities. Nobody has to target you personally for you to get hit.
What if my site is already infected?
Buy the plan, run a scan, and the malware is quarantined and removed. On higher tiers, hack repair covers getting the site fully working again, not just cleaned.
Do I need SSL if I am not selling anything?
Yes. Browsers flag unencrypted pages as unsafe, search engines rank them lower, and visitors abandon them. SSL is table stakes for any site now.
Do these work if I change hosts later?
Mostly. Website Security and Website Backup attach to your site rather than to a hosting account, so they keep working when you move. The exception is the Managed SSL Service, which covers sites on our own WordPress and Web Hosting plans — if you leave, switch to a standard SSL Certificate instead.
